A Song for the Soul: The Design Journey of HeartSong
HeartSong, a collection of poems exploring life's profound themes, is more than just a book; it's an invitation to connect with your inner self. This case study delves into the design decisions that brought the author's vision to life, crafting a visual identity that resonates with the target audience and complements the emotional depth of the poetry.
Dorcas, the author, aims to connect with readers on a personal level and offer comfort, encouragement, and a sense of shared experience. HeartSongs of life, love, faith, self-discovery, and everyday challenges.
My Task:
Develop a visually appealing book identity that speaks to the target audience and accentuates the poetry's emotional depth in both print and ebook versions.
Visual Identity & Design:
Cover Design: Developed a series of 5 visually appealing cover design options featuring colorful flowers to symbolize heartfelt emotions and the connection the book would achieve with readers. Why flowers? They are a great way to express different types of emotions, like joy, love, grief, friendship and so much more.
Musical Icon Integration: Subtly incorporated musical notes or icons within the cover design to represent the harmonious essence of "HeartSong".
Inner Page Design: Crafted aesthetically pleasing inner pages with a clear distinction between headings (using a beautiful display serif font) and poem text (utilizing a clean sans-serif font for optimal readability).
Ornamental Elements: Incorporated subtle ornamental design elements throughout the inner pages to enhance the reading experience and evoke a sense of love and poetry.
Color Theory:
Primary Color: Dark Terra Cotta: This rich, earthy tone serves as the foundation, symbolizing stability, comfort, and the enduring nature of human emotions explored in the poems.
Secondary Color: Royal Orange: A vibrant pop of royal orange adds a touch of warmth and energy, reflecting the hopeful and uplifting messages within the collection.
Tertiary Color: White: White space provides breathing room for the text and allows the reader to focus on the emotional journey offered by the poems. The stark contrast between white and dark terracotta further reinforces the poems' themes of light and dark, joy and sorrow. pen_spark

Cover & Headings (Display Serif): A classic and elegant serif font was chosen for the cover title and headings within the book. This font exudes a sense of sophistication and tradition, aligning with the timeless nature of poetry.
Poem Text (Sans-Serif): A clean and modern sans-serif font ensures optimal readability for the poems themselves. This practical choice allows the reader to immerse themselves in the words without visual distractions.
